Saint Mary’s Park in The South Bronx was once upon a time the estate of The Founding Father who came up with the three little words We, The People.
I believe you will
write The Great American Novel, said my 6th grade English teacher.
Just write what you know.
I know of playing in abandoned cars and burnt buildings
and crawling inside a television set without a tube.
I know of climbing a mountain in my cowboy hat and silver
six shooters.
I know the mysterious beauty of the country
I know songs. I know…
Almost Heaven
West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains
Shenandoah Rivers
Life is old here
Older than the trees
Younger than the mountains
Blowing like a breeze
Country Roads
Take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia
Mountain Momma
Take me home

December 30, 2017
On a Friday evening of rush hour traffic
I saw a disturbing sight after getting X-rays on my right
foot.
I saw people ignoring an unconscious African American male
in his fifties.
He was laid out in the street in front of a busy liquor
store of holiday sales.
The brutal cold was made colder by indifference of passerby
people.
I turned around and saw the 41 Precinct on Longwood Avenue.
The lobby of the precinct was changed after 9/11.
It reminded me of barbwires between East Berlin and West
Berlin before The Wall came down. The grim atmosphere took me back to an
abandoned precinct in a 1990s video game on a zombie apocalypse called Resident
Evil.
Every cop turned around as the desk sergeant looked up while
I pulled down my dark beetle green hood. I have memories of being harassed by
cops and detectives to take the police test. One of my uncles is a hard-nosed
cop and another one is a correction officer.
At the Bronx County Courthouse, a judge lectured me on the
importance of being beneficial to society.
However, my religion in my childhood was to sit in front of
an eye and wait for hands to light a fuse.
Good morning, Dan.
Your mission, if you decide to accept, is to help that poor
man from freezing to death that would cause a public relations nightmare for
the 41 Precinct.
As always, if you are accused of grandstanding, you will be
disavowed of good clean unselfish citizenship. Good luck, Dan.
I stared at the poor man and thought, but for the grace of
God, there goes I.
I turned myself into a flare of emotion on the highway of
life and waved down a flashing squad cop that sped around the corner of
Longwood Avenue. A tall beefy cop got out and put his hat on as he walked by me
with a look of mild disgust upon the sight of the poor man in the freezer the
weather has turned ‘Gotham City’.
That expression on his face if taken to the extreme can
result into people being lined up and shot as seen on an old Star Trek episode
called Bread & Circuses. It can result in poor people being turned into
high protein crackers to feed the rich in a time of famine.
These days due to mild mannered apartheid, I see myself as
an energy based entity who turns into a mentally disturbed Puerto Rican instead
of a good looking white guy in Smallville just to get The X Files off my back.
I look upon America with alien eyes akin to the big ones on
a baby at the end of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, directed by a man who grew
up in The Bronx, a mediation on the end result of evolution on the better
angels of human nature.
This country is like
The USS Enterprise. I help it because, like you and your crew, captain, I want
to go home. I turn around and see the cops stand over the poor man.
I walk into the night to soon find myself grateful for a hot
shower, grateful for a home cooked meal and grateful for a bed from which I can
see Marvel’s Agents Of Shield, which was preempted by a special edition of
20/20.
You can’t always get
what you want but I want to wish you a future where dreams come true far away
from virtual reality. The end of 2017 means wishing for a Happy New Tear.
I mean Year.
Or like Steve Martin said
Nah.
